Here is one idea for painting that will not come off because it is bonded to the wood. The product is called Penetrol. It is a thin oily substance that is added to Paint. A good use for it is in oil base paint used to paint the trim on houses with wood windows. I have vinyl replacement windows but the trim is wood. You mix about 10-15 percent Penetrol into the paint. It causes the paint to be absorbed into the wood. You do have to scrape and prepare the wood first. But it really holds onto the wood well. So your paint job lasts several years.
Second use is as an additive to oil based paint and paint the door upright without taking it off the hinges using a brush. It will dry smooth and not show the brush strokes. It is an amazing additive yet few people know about it. The ingredients cause the surface of the paint to smooth out and level off even on the side of a door still on the hinges. The primary ingredient is linseed oil something you don’t see much anymore. Like many old remedies this is one idea that works well. Don’t skimp and save money it is well worth it to use on any oil based paint job. The results are worth the extra cost.
First you will not have to repaint as often. Big time savings there. 2nd you will be able to use a brush in places you would have needed a spray can before. I highly recommend it. Use of Penetrol is one of the key factors in a good paint job. Insist that you contractor use it. If he does not know what Penetrol is, keep looking for a painter who does.
